The downloads module is used to manage files that users may download from your site.

When you get into the downloads module, there are three sections you should notice.

  1. The side menu bar allows you to switch between three modes. The 'Items' mode is used to manage the files within the downloads. The 'Categories' mode is used to manage the various categories that you may want to create. 'Import files' is used to import uncategorized files into different categories.
  2. The item organizer is used to publish/unpublish, edit, and delete download items.
  3. The visual editor is used to set the properties for the downloads items and change/add the announce and description information.

Within the Items or Category editors, you can add new downloads and edit many properties.

  • Category: All files need to have a category. You can select one, or create a new one by entering the name into the text box below it. Required.
  • File Name: This is the file's name. Required.
  • File: This is the file's type. The system will usually select the right one when you upload the file.
  • File (4.8 Mb max): This is the path to the file. You can click the 'Browse' button to the right of it to search for it in Windows. Required.
  • Created: This is when the file was created.
  • Modified: This is when the file was last modified.
  • Announce: This is the text that is put in the announce header on the page. A one or two sentance summary of the file works best here.
  • Description: This is the text that is put in for the description for the file. File specs, description, version, and other information fits well here.
  • Options: This is where you can change the url link for the file, the page title in browser when viewing the url, and keywords. You can also elect not to show the item in lists, which effectively removes it from being browsed to unless the specific link to it is given or you can make that item show first in any lists it is displayed in (useful for important files).

The item organizer lets you edit, publish, and delete the item. Press the edit button to open the item in the visual editor. Press the publish button to unpublish/publish the download item. Press the delete button to delete the file.

The categories editor works the exact same way as the items editor, but you are essentially creating folders for the items instead of items.
